Q: How does solar power work?

A: PV panels convert sunlight into electricity when sunlight passes through panels of glass onto a semiconductor material, usually silicon wafers. When sunlight hits the semiconductor, directly or indirectly, it causes electrons to be released. The free electrons create an electrical current that generates electricity.

Q: What is the difference of Monocrystalline solar panel and Polycrystalline solar panel?

A: Polycrystalline material is made up of many small silicon crystals while the monocrystalline material is one singe crystal of silicon. Single crystal silicon is more efficient at converting photons to electrons for electricity. Even though poly solar panels efficiency is relatively lower, they are cheaper to manufacture so they can be competitive and popular in market. They would need more area to produce the same amount of electricity as the monocrystalline panels.
