Automotive Ignition Coils

      The ignition coil is responsible for providing spark to the spark plugs. On most vehicles there is one ignition coil that sends spark to the distributor that then distributes spark to the appropriate spark plug.

      But on newer cars, there may be an ignition coil for every spark plug on the car. The ignition coil is simply a transformer that takes 12v DC power and converts it to 40KV.

      The ignition coil is usually filled with oil to keep it cool and they can after time leak, if this occurs you must change the ignition coil as soon as possible.

      If your car has starting running very poorly, or stopped running entirely while showing symptoms of lacking spark, your ignition coil is most likely to blame.

      If you have a single ignition coil and it fails, your car will not run at all and will not have any spark.

      If your car uses multiple ignition coils you will experience a lack of power, decreased gas mileage, increased emissions and certainly a check engine light.

      If you have a newer car with the ability to use a hand held scanner, finding what ignition coil you need to replace would be easy. If you do not, you will some diagnosing skills or a friend that does!
