Rose oil obtained from steam distllation of Rose species (family – Rosaceae ) is on of the costliest and sweetest fragrant material known to the woeld from the ancient times . It is a perennial plant wihe an average commercial life span of 20-25 years. Certain species can survive uoto 50 years. Rose oil has very wide applications in making costly fragrances. Perfumery , cosmetics and tobacco industries are the major consumers of rose oil. On limited scale it is also used for flavouring purposes. The oldest records of distillation of rose is found in the ancient Hindu testament “Ayurveda” (2000 BC). However, the oldest record of production of rose water is found in the writing of ibn-khaldoon. According to him, the province of faristan in Iran supplied 30,000 bottles of rose watrer to the caliph of Baghdad between 810-817 A. D. It indicates that probably the production of rose water started in iran some where in 8 century.By the turn of 1600A.D.the rose oil distillation was developed in Shiraz and rose oil was called “Atter” which is a Turkish word. From Iran the art of distillation of rose spread to Turkey,Bulgaria and india

 Although, rose can be cultivated in a variety of soils, medium loam well drained soile are considered most suitable.Rose is basically a temperate plant and requres mild temperature for potimum growth. Considering the above facts, hilly areas and mid hill conditions are most suitable for cultivation. Rose can also be cultivated in sub-tropical climate, however, the yield is lower then temperate and sub –temperate climate. In India,most of rose growing areas come nder in sub –troical climate. Recently, rose cultivation has been introduced in temperate climate of j & k and himachal pradesh, from where the level of yield reported is much higer then subtropical. Bright sunny days, high humidity (60%) with mild temperature (20-25 C) are most conducive conditions for enhancing the lower production, as these conditions facilitate prolong & sunchronized flowering.

DIRECT FIRED DISTILLATON UNIT (HYDRO-STEAM DISTILLATION)

 

         The unit consists of a kettle (still), a columm, condensor and receiver.The whole unit can be of copper or stainless steel. The capacity of still may range from 100-250 kg flowers per batch. To increase the fuel eficiency and to generate sufficient steam, fume tubes are fitted in the bottom of the still. The outlet of the receiver is connected wth the column to recycle the condensate into the still , after the separation of oil takes place in the receiver. This process is know as “Cohobation” which has been found to imprve the recovery of oil. The plant is simple in operation and can be operated by a semi skilled worker .Direct fred plant may cost Rs.2.5-3.0 lacs, if made out of stainless steel. The plant takes about 4-6 hrs per batch for completion of distillation.

The true rose oil is a light yellow, occasionaly slight greenish and semi solid at room temperature. The odour of the rose oil is very pleasant , powerful and characteristic of fress rose and the flavour is sweet and somewhat hony-like. The physical properties of the oil are:
