Function of Collar Stay

Collar Stays (sometimes known as collar bones, sticks, stiffeners, knuckles and tabs) are shirt accessories. 

Collar Stays are smooth, rigid strips of metal or plastic, rounded at one end and pointed at the other, inserted into specially made pockets on the underside of a man's shirt collar to stabilize the collar's points. The stays ensure that the collar lies flat against the collarbone, looking crisp and remaining in the correct place.

Collar stays (sometimes known as collar thingies, collar sticks, bones, knuckles, tabs, in the UK, collar stiffeners, and in Eastern Canada collar stiffs) are shirt accessories.

Collar stays are removed from shirts before dry cleaning or pressing, as they could damage the shirt in the process, and then replaced prior to wearing. Shirts that are press ironed with the collar stays are vulnerable to damage, as this results in a telltale impression of the collar stay in the fabric of the collar. Some shirts have stays which are sewn into the collar and are not removable.

What are Collar Stays?

Collar stays, also called “collar tabs” or “collar stiffeners”, are flat, rigid pieces of plastic or metal which are inserted in special pockets on the underside of dress shirt collars.

The purpose of the collar stays is to keep the shirt collar in place by adding weight and crispness to an otherwise light and flexible piece of fabric.

Collars stays are either removable or sewn-in. Sewn-in collar stays are almost always made from a thin plastic as they try to balance giving a rigid look to the collar without damaging it in the wash.

How to Use Collar Stays

Simply slide in the collar stay in the pocket on the underside of the dress shirt collar. After that, fold down the collar as normal. Remember that pointed shirt collars require pointed shirt stays. Rounded shirt collars call for rounded collar stays.

Before you wash your dress shirt (or send the shirt to the dry cleaners), make sure you remove your collar stays. Also remove them before you iron your shirt. Collar stays are easy to lose can damage your dress shirt if left in by eithering tearing at the fabric during a wash or leaving a crease under an iron.
